This year’s Christmas and New Year break has come with a whirl of activity in the Marina. The new fuel jetty pump is being installed today, security camera upgrades have been made, and there have been many temporary berth rentals to accommodate and register. I am really looking forward to the festive season when I catch my breath and have some time with family!

AGM 2022
The AGM for licence holders was held on the 24 November 2022. The Board reviewed the year’s activities and presented the financial statements. The meeting noted another very good year with high occupancy levels and good progress with the pier maintenance programme. The Board was also pleased that resource consent was gained to clear the entrance of sand and maintain channel depth for safe navigation. Sand clearing operations were started in September.

Security Upgrade
We have recently expanded and upgraded our security camera network with improved coverage. Nevertheless, we advise Marina users to be security conscious over the holiday period.
You can help yourself by:
· Photographing equipment and recording details such as the serial numbers.
· Checking your vessel regularly.
· Reporting thefts/incidents to Police and the Marina Office.
· Secure your valuable outboards, keep tenders on board and locked away!!
Biosecurity - Top of the South
Top of the South Group have asked us to share the following notice with you:
Harmful Marine Organisms – what Mana boaties can do
The best way to keep Mana hosting few harmful marine organisms is to keep your hull clean and check gear before returning from other locations.
At present Mana has fewer harmful species than are found in the top of the South Island. This could easily change. One vessel coming into the marina with a pest species could change the status of the marina forever. The only pest species known to be present in the marina are wakame and clubbed tunicate. Wakame (Undaria) is the seaweed found on your sushi. The clubbed tunicate (Styela clava) is a solitary sea squirt with a small stalk. Both were accidently introduced from Japan 20 to 30 years ago. It is illegal to move these species around attached to your hull.
In the wider Cook Strait region other pests include the Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella). Vessels with compromised antifouling visiting other areas risk bringing these back to Mana. The recent find of aquarium weed, Caulerpa, at Great Barrier and Red Mercury Islands means that extra care will be required in ensuring ground tackle is cleaned before moving between locations.
If you do go the Sounds expect your vessel to be checked by the marine biosecurity team there. “In the 2021/22 survey we checked 474 vessels of which 75 (27%) were visiting from outside the TOS. Of the latter, 53 vessels were from marinas in Wellington.” said Peter Lawless the Marine Biosecurity Coordinator.
Information on all of these species and the current rules on hull fouling for the Top of the South can be found at https://www.marinebiosecurity.co.nz/.

Friendly Reminders
Dog owners - Scoop the poop
When out walking your dog for nature to call, make sure to use the doggie doo doo bags from the dispenser in front of C pier. I have recently seen poop left on the lawn which isn’t nice for Graeme to have to clean up prior to mowing.
Reduce your speed and wake
Take a look at this neat you tube clip created by the Northland Regional Council, reminding us to all reduce our speed to reduce our wake Reduce your wake
BBQ area available for Marina users
You are welcome to use the BBQ to relax and enjoy those famous Mana Marina sunsets.
Christmas Grinch
In keeping with the Christmas theme, I thought I’d let you know of our major gripes:
Use of the Marina Car Park – There are fewer carparks than berths, so there are some very simple rules when using the carpark:
- Please make sure that you park correctly within the painted lines and do not protrude beyond the park to obstruct the roadways or boat trailer park access.
- Boat trailers are to be parked in the designated boat trailer parks not the carparks.
- Trailers, caravans, campervans, and trucks should not be parked in the carpark.
- Please do not use your access card to allow others to enter the carpark (access cards misused in this way will be cancelled)
Overnight Campers and Caravans – we are not a campground, anyone wishing to stay in their van should use the Freedom camp sites on the beach side of Ngatitoa Domain.
EV Charging – It is not okay to expect all licence-holders to pay to charge your EV. Please save the planet by using a proper charging outlet, or your own electricity supply. Don’t plug into the marina sockets.
Rubbish Bins – The recycling and rubbish collection costs the Marina about $36,000 each year, so again you shouldn’t expect everyone else to pay for your rubbish disposal. The skips are for Marina waste only.
Please don’t dump gas bottles, tyres, refrigerators, couches, office furniture, or household rubbish!
Please also use the recycling bins as labelled and don’t put rubbish in them. Again, the Marina pays a premium to have recycling bins at the Marina and the effort and cost is wasted if they are contaminated.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Season’s Greetings to all. Relax and be safe this summer. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and safe boating this holiday season.
From the Board; George, Clive, Bruce, Eleanor
and the Marina Team; Neil, Sandie, Andrew, and Steven.
